Course aims

To develop learners’ skills and understanding of the fire investigation, enabling them to carry out the role of Tier 1 fire investigator.

Who should attend?

This qualification is aimed at raising awareness of fire investigation amongst practitioners initially attending a fire scene and those who carry out Tier 1 Fire Investigations.
This qualification equips learners to carry out Tier 1 fire investigations, which could be carried out by fire and rescue or police personnel. This qualification is aimed at practitioners initially attending a fire scene, who are most likely to be Watch Managers, Crew Managers and Junior Scenes of Crime Officers.

– Understand the principles and responsibilities of fire investigation
– Be able to investigate a fire within own level of responsibility

Length of course

The course will comprise 5 hours of pre-module study followed by a 2-day taught module comprising 16 hours of lectures, seminars, case studies and simulations. A post-module assignment will be expected to require a further 5 hours of study.

Future career progression and development

Learners could progress to other qualifications in the fire and rescue sector or investigations. They could undergo further training to specialise in fire investigation, leading to the SFJ Awards Level 5 Certificate in Fire Investigation.
